Best practices on engineering a good prompt.
Prompt Writing for Text-Based Tools
- Begin your prompt with clear instruction or question
- Be specific – “write a story” will provide a generic output, think about descriptors that you wish your story to follow. What is the genre, who is the audience, how long do you want your story to be?
- Specify the desired output.
- Clearly define what type of final format or product you want to generate. Are you looking for an outline, a paragraph, an essay?
- Explore word count parameters.
- Clarify role, tone, and audience.
- A really great way to do this is exploring who your audience is.
- Use the “act as if…” to help clarify your audience.
- Correct and give feedback.
- Adjust your prompt a few times to see how the instructions impact the output.
- Make your feedback clear and concise as you hone your results.
- Tell it what parts were useful and what parts need to be improved.
- If you see any mistakes in the output, note this in your response so that the AI can correct mistakes.
- Highlight to the AI what worked well.
